Write the mandate before the title

Define the enterprise outcomes, the problems inherited and what credible progress looks like after 12 and 24 months. Then choose a title that matches the mandate and the authority available.

Make decision rights visible

Clarify ownership of platform investment, governance, AI risk, analytics delivery and business adoption. A leader cannot be accountable for outcomes while critical decisions sit ambiguously elsewhere.

Describe the starting conditions

Candidates need an honest view of team capability, sponsorship, architecture, data quality and organisational appetite. This context helps the right leaders opt in and prevents a late-stage mismatch.

Assess leadership in context

Look for evidence from environments with comparable constraints—not merely an identical title. Test how candidates have influenced peers, built operating models, prioritised investment and changed the quality of decisions.
